HANDICAP SERIES
All races are handicap races based on the Portsmouth Yardstick system.
Competitors are not required to sail the same class of boat in races in the same series in handicap events. There must be at least 3 boats of any class in a race to be included in the Handicap Series.
CLASS SERIES
Results are extracted from the handicap races to determine fleet points. There must be at least 3 boats of the same class in a race for fleet points to be extracted. 3 valid class races constitute a class series. All races count.
Where the number of boats and races allows there will be Spring, Summer, and Autumn class series.
CADET SERIES
Cadets must be under 18 on 1st April of the year of racing.
Results are extracted from the handicap races to determine cadet points. There must be at least 3 boats sailed by cadets in a race for cadet points to be extracted.
PURSUIT RACE STARTING PROCEDURE
The purpose of a Pursuit Race is to start boats in such a way as to bring them all to the same point at the end of a given time. This is achieved by the use of the boat's PY or (handicap number).
For example, for a 30 minute race, a Laser Pico, PY 1265 is started 29 minutes 16 seconds before the race finish time, a Laser, PY 1080 will start 25 minutes 2 seconds before the end of the race. See the table below.
At the end of the normal 5 minute count down, the Topper, with START NUMBER 0 starts. Crews with race watches should set them to count down 5,4,1,0 and then count up.
Subsequently
individual/class start signals will be given by a single horn note accompanied
by the showing of that class' START NUMBER by the OOD or SBO.
This means that if a boat sees their start number (or a higher one) displayed
they should start.
If crews start early, they will be disqualified unless they return and re-cross
the start line.
It is up to the competitor to know which is their signal
by noting their START TIME and START NUMBER.
Again see the table below which shows 3 examples of race duration (60, 45 and 30
minutes).
For example, for a 30 minute race, a Laser Pico, PY 1265 has a START NUMBER of 1 and a START TIME of 44 seconds after the normal 5 minute count down signal reaches zero. A Laser, PY 1080 has a START NUMBER of 9 and a START TIME of 4 minutes 58 seconds after the 5 minute count down. See the table below.

PURSUIT RACE FINISHING PROCEDURE
When the race ends the horn sounds THREE LONG NOTES. The Safety Boat will position itself at the NEXT mark to the leading boat (which could be the starting line) and record the order of the boats rounding it. The leading boat is the winner the third boat is third and last boat is last. Alternatively the safety boat has the option to travel back through fleet noting positions. This depends on the last leg of the course: Whether it is a reach or a beat.
STARTING PROCEDURE FOR NON PURSUIT RACES
The class flag is hoisted at 5 minutes, followed by the preparatory flag at 4 minutes. At 1 minute the preparatory flag is lowered, and the class flag comes down at the start. Each flag is accompanied by a horn.
