COME AND TRY SAILING
If you would like to try sailing please come along any day we are sailing on the calendar and we will hopefully have you crewing for a member by the end of the day. If you are a more experienced sailor we have boats for hire or bring your own boat along for the day. We have a rescue boat on the water from 11.00am and will make sure you receive some free help and advice before and on the water.
JUNIOR SAILING
This year we are wanting to promote our juniors by holding more junior events as well as travelling to other sailing clubs for competition. If you can help or are interested in junior sailing please contact David Sewell on 01388 451215 or email david_sewell37@hotmail.com
Buddy Sailing
From the 6th April 2008 the new Buddy System regulations have allowed the club to offer this facility to its members. The information given below gives an overview on what we would expect to happen when members went Buddy Sailing. The system is new and is under a trial period.
TEESDALE SAILING CLUB LIMITED
Buddy Sailing System Guidelines
For Informal Sailing Out Of Normal Opening Hours.
Introduction
The primary responsibility for safety in sailing activities lies with the individuals. The following must be assessed prior to sailing:
1. Awareness of weather and water conditions and the limitations these impose on the individual’s ability to cope.
2. Technical competence in boat handling.
3. The ability to recognise and avoid potentially dangerous situations.
The following points must be checked prior to sailing:
Buoyancy Aids:
Adequate personal buoyancy shall be worn by all sailors at all times while afloat. A wetsuit does not constitute adequate personal buoyancy.
Protective Clothing:
No person shall be afloat without appropriate protective clothing suitable for the prevailing and forecast weather and water conditions. It is preferred that Wet/Dry suits are worn in April, May, Sept and October.
Buoyancy:
Any craft used shall have its designed buoyancy maintained in satisfactory working order.
Young Members:
No member under the age of 14 shall be permitted to sail on the club’s water when safety boat cover is not available. Any member over the age of 14 but under 18 shall only be allowed on the water when safety boat cover is not available if a buddy system is in place and provided that they are qualified to RYA Dinghy Certificate Level 2 or above and are sailing as part of a group comprising at least two adults, one of which shall be a supervising parent or guardian in permanent attendance at all times.
Restrictions on Sailing:
Sailing will only be allowed during the hours of daylight.
Only recognised members of the club shall be allowed to sail during Buddy Sailing times.
As part of the Buddy System, sailing shall only be permitted when another craft is available on the water to give assistance as necessary.
There shall always be at least two craft on the water at any one time so that one is available to stand by and give assistance if the other should get into difficulties.
Those craft shall stay within sight of each other at all times.
All persons accessing the water shall sign out on the wipe board located in the changing room lobby and sign in when they have left the water. Times of signing out and in are also required to maintain security and to alert other users as to their presence on the premises.
Sailors going afloat do so entirely at their own risk.
Members opening up and closing up the club grounds and property outside of normal opening hours shall be responsible for the safety and security of the premises.
Third Party Insurance:
All members keeping craft on the premises or sailing shall abide by the clubs existing rules on insurance cover.
Safety
During buddy sailing times, all boats or boards shall carry a means of signalling distress, comprising a whistle plus a dayglo orange flag and / or distress flare.
A sailing knife must be carried per one individual boat either on the person or attached to the boat.
A First Aid box is located in the clubhouse under the counter.
Righting lines should be attached under the gunwales or attach a knotted line to the shrouds or mast to help with righting the craft.
In the event of injury emergency assistance can be summoned using the payphone at the visitor centre.
Remember
It is the helms responsibilities when crafts are taken out. Finally craft can be replaced but people cannot - If in doubt, don’t go out!
Failure to comply could result in this privilege being removed.
